The tiniest person you know is now the largest part of your life. Putting up safety gates can help keep curious crawlers away from the potentially dangerous areas of your home, like staircases or the kitchen, while still encouraging them to experience their environment.

What to look for when shopping for a baby gate:

Dimensions. Deciding which safety baby gate is best is largely dependent upon your space. Measure the space before making any purchases, checking for any potential mounting blocks, like uneven surfaces or base molding. These may require additional mounting kits for proper installation.

Walk-through vs. climb-over Walk-through doorways are recommended, as opposed to ones that need to be climbed over. Climb-over gates can pose a tripping hazard if you don't clear the top of the gate, whereas walk-through gates have a door that an adult can open when you need to move from room to room.

Locking mechanism. Seeking gates with self-locking mechanisms is best. A self-locking gate will automatically lock when the gate is closed instead of requiring a two-step locking process of closing, then latching the gate.

Check that safety gates meet the industry standards. Look for JPMA certification (Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association) to ensure your gate has been through third-party checks for safety considerations like height and spacing safety requirements. Watch out for gaps exceeding three inches, to avoid any stuck limbs or escapees, prepare to mount gates as low to the floor as possible, but never over three inches from the base.

What is the best safety gate for stairs?

There are two things you’ll want to look for when shopping for a baby gate for the top of the stairs: a hardware mount (pressure mounts aren’t recommended for stairs since they’re not secured to the walls) and no bottom bar (since that can be a trip hazard). Check out the options we have available of Kidco ® safeway ® Top of Stair Baby Safety Gates.

How do you install a KidCo baby gate?

It's crucial to get the right type of safety gate for each location in your home. Gates used at the top of stairs, indoors or outside, must be hardware-mounted. You can use pressure-mounted gates at the bottom of stairs and between rooms.

    Hardware-mounted or permanent gate
This type of gate requires screws for installation in a doorway. If properly secured to the doorjamb or between two walls, hardware-mounted gates are the most secure choice, although no gate can be guaranteed to keep a child in or out.

Installation: You must drill holes into the door frame or, if the opening doesn't have a wood door frame, you must drill through the drywall or plaster into the wood framing behind. You can remove many of these gates from the mounting hardware when you want the doorway or opening free.

    Pressure-mounted gate

Pressure-mounted gates are suitable for less hazardous locations, such as between rooms. They're useful in areas where falling isn't a major concern, such as in a doorway separating two areas with same-level flooring; you might use one, for example, to cordon off your kitchen so you can make dinner without a crawling baby underfoot. You could also use one at the bottom of a stairway to discourage your little climber from venturing upstairs.

Installation: To set one up, you adjust it to fit the opening by squeezing it into position. A pressure bar or other locking mechanism wedges the gate in place, leaving no permanent holes, although it may mark the door frame or wall.
