Doolittle served as a general in the United States Army Air Forces during the Second World War, earning the Medal of Honor as the commander of the Doolittle Raid. Doolittle was one of the most famous pilots during the inter-war period. Doolittle's most important contribution to aeronautical technology was the development of instrument flying. In 1929, he became the first pilot to take off, fly, and land an airplane using instruments alone, without a view outside the cockpit. Doolittle received the Medal of Honor, presented by President Franklin D. Roosevelt at the White House, for planning and leading a successful attack on Tokyo, Kobe, Osaka, and Nagoya in 1942.
