What is the meaning of a military shadow box? What is a shadow box used for?

The military shadow box has its roots in the United States Navy. As part of a ship for their entire life, upon retiring and leaving to go ashore for the last time, it was thought that if the sailor's shadow had touched the ground before them, that this would be considered bad luck.

A box would be made to hold past accomplishments and accolades, a metaphorical, "shadow," of this person to counter act this. With their shadow safely confined in this box, the sailor could walk on land without this burden and be handed their shadow box shortly thereafter.

A shadow box is used to house the "shadow," of one's former self in the military. This can be in the form of patches, medals and other accomplishments earned during service. Some people will use flags, pictures and certificates in their shadow box.

With some opting to display flags, medals, patches and other important pieces from their time of service in the United States military.
