Georgia's 2001 flag version is a compromisation of the former flag designs of the state, including the controversial 1956 Georgia state flag. The ring of 13 stars acknowledges that Georgia is one of the original Thirteen Colonies. The arch detail of Georgia's old flag symbolizes the state's constitution while the three pillars present the three branches of government. The state's motto, Wisdom, Justice, and Moderation, comes on a banner wrapped around the pillars. The male, dressed in an American Revolutionary War colonial suit, guards the pillars. Another state epithet, In God We Trust, is shown at the bottom together with the US flag and some of this state's flags that preceded this design.
