In the 18th Century, no American colonial fireplace was truly complete without a hand forged natural iron fireback, a legacy of the colonists' European heritage. Blacksmiths would make firebacks out of iron to help prevent damage to the firebricks caused by the heat and flames of everyday fires, and to radiate the heat out into the room, making your fireplace more efficient.
The metal of the fireback is heated by the fire, and then that heat is radiated back into the room. The thick iron holds that heat, which would otherwise be lost, and sends this heat back into the room. A fireback therefore may increase the efficiency of the fire by as much as 50 percent. The thicker the fireback, the longer (and softer) this radiated heating effect. While wood fires have low efficiency, for those that prefer the ambiance of an open wood fire the fireback helps to minimize this problem. Another important function of the fireback is the protection of the back of the fireplace from heat and flames. Old firebacks are often beautiful pieces of decorative art and have sometimes been displayed apart from the fireplace.
